What discounts can disabled people get?
A realistic map of disability-related discounts, concessions and support—separating automatic entitlement from schemes that need a separate application.

In brief
There is no single national disability-discount card and no universal list that applies to everyone. Help can depend on a specific benefit award, age, mobility needs, local policy, vehicle use, income or the organisation’s own access scheme.
The most valuable support is not always marketed as a discount. Council Tax reductions, travel concessions, NHS help, water schemes, social tariffs, vehicle tax relief and grants may reduce essential costs more than retail offers.
Start with essential household costs
Check Council Tax, energy and water support, broadband social tariffs, NHS charges and transport before spending time on small retail discounts. Use the exact award letter or circumstances when an organisation asks for eligibility; a diagnosis alone may not meet the scheme rules.
Travel and vehicle help
Possible routes include Blue Badge, disabled bus passes, railcards, vehicle tax relief, Motability and local community transport. Each has a different test. Holding PIP or DLA may help with some routes but does not create automatic eligibility for all of them.
Leisure, access and companion schemes
Venues may offer concession prices, essential-companion tickets or access memberships. Read the access policy rather than assuming the cheapest ticket is the correct one. Some schemes accept varied evidence and should not demand more medical information than necessary.
Avoid paid “discount directories”
Use official scheme pages and established charities. Be cautious of sites that charge for lists, promise grants or ask for identity documents before showing eligibility. Keep a note of renewal dates because many concessions expire.
A question for any organisation
This asks about access as well as price.
I am disabled and would like to check your current concession, access or essential-companion arrangements. Please explain the eligibility evidence you accept, whether an application is needed, what the discount covers and how long approval lasts. I would prefer not to share medical information beyond what is necessary.
A practical checklist
- Check essential bills before retail discounts.
- Read each scheme’s own eligibility rule.
- Ask about companion or access support as well as price.
- Record renewal dates and accepted evidence.
