Tax reliefs, concessions and discounts worth checking in the UK
A cautious guide to tax reliefs and concessions that may reduce costs—without assuming a scheme applies just because a household is disabled or on a low income.
Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance
In brief
Tax reliefs are often tied to a precise expense, employment arrangement, disability benefit, vehicle use or household status. They are not all claimed through the same system, and some are allowances while others are exemptions, refunds or reduced rates.
Check the official rule and who must make the claim. A legitimate relief should not require paying a company a large percentage of the refund for information available free from HMRC or the relevant authority.
Employment and work expenses
Employees may be able to claim tax relief on qualifying professional fees, uniforms, tools, mileage or working-from-home costs under current rules. The employer’s reimbursement and the tax-relief claim are different. Keep receipts and check whether a flat-rate expense applies.
Disability and transport concessions
Vehicle tax relief, VAT relief on certain disability goods, Blue Badge and Motability each use different criteria. A benefit award may be relevant to one route but not another. Ask the supplier to show the legal basis before zero-rating a purchase.
Marriage, savings and household status
Marriage Allowance, Blind Person’s Allowance and savings allowances depend on individual circumstances and tax position. Use HMRC’s official tools or independent advice rather than relying on social-media checklists.
Protect yourself from refund companies
Read any assignment of repayment and fee terms. Some companies submit broad claims, take a percentage and remain authorised to receive future refunds. Contact HMRC directly if unsure and never share Government Gateway credentials.
A verification question
Use this with HMRC, an adviser or a supplier.
I want to check whether [named relief or concession] applies to my circumstances. Please confirm the exact eligibility rule, who makes the claim, the evidence period, any deadline and whether using this route affects another allowance. I do not authorise a third party to receive refunds unless I agree in writing.
A practical checklist
- Name the exact relief rather than asking for “all discounts”.
- Use HMRC or the responsible authority’s official page.
- Keep receipts and evidence for the stated period.
- Read fees and repayment assignments before using a claims company.
