Where Do I Start?

A first-step guide for the moment everything is connected and you cannot tell which bill, form or organisation should come first.

Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance

In brief

Begin with safety and essentials, not the longest task. Check whether anyone is unsafe, without food, at risk of losing housing, unable to use essential energy or missing urgent medication. Urgent Support or National Help can route those needs before ordinary admin.

For everything else, choose the problem with the nearest consequence: a court date, disconnection warning, benefit deadline, rent action or missed essential payment. One completed contact is more useful than researching ten possible schemes.

Sort the situation into three time windows

Write what may happen today, within seven days and later this month. Put only consequences in the list. “Council Tax letter” becomes “enforcement visit threatened on Friday”; “benefits” becomes “reconsideration deadline in twelve days”. This makes order visible.

Choose a first action small enough to finish

The action might be opening one letter, taking a meter reading, sending a three-line message or booking an advice call. Avoid tasks such as “sort debt” or “fix benefits”. The task is complete when a specific next step is recorded.

Use the right HiddenHelp route

Use Urgent Support for immediate necessities, National Help to find a trusted organisation, Guides to understand a subject, Bill Tracker to organise recurring costs and Support Plan to keep chosen actions. You do not need to use every tool.

When another person is helping

Tell them the first outcome you want and what information they may share. Ask them to reduce choices rather than add a large list. A supporter can hold the plan, but the person affected should remain involved in decisions wherever possible.

The first message when you cannot explain everything

This works with an adviser, council or provider.

Several things are going wrong and I am overwhelmed. The most urgent consequence is [what may happen and when]. I need help with the first action only. Please tell me who should deal with it, what minimum information they need, and what I should do today.

A practical checklist

  • Check immediate safety, food, housing, energy and medication.
  • Write consequences for today, seven days and one month.
  • Choose one action with a clear finish.
  • Save the outcome in the Support Plan if helpful.

Choose one next action

You do not need to finish everything today. Find a relevant organisation through National Help, or save the action you want to return to in your Support Plan.

HiddenHelp explains options and helps you organise a next step. It does not decide eligibility, make awards, or replace regulated legal, medical or financial advice.
