Smart Commuting: How to Plan the Safest and Cheapest Routes

How to compare commuting routes by total cost, reliability, accessibility and personal safety rather than fare alone.

Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance

In brief

The cheapest advertised fare can be poor value if it requires unreliable connections, inaccessible stations, expensive parking or a taxi after disruption. Compare the complete door-to-door journey at the times you actually travel.

Include season tickets, flexible tickets, concessionary passes, railcards, fuel, parking, tolls, charging and unpaid travel time. Ask an employer about flexible start times, home working, cycle schemes, season-ticket loans or disability adjustments before changing jobs or moving home solely for the commute.

Compare three realistic routes

Map the normal route, a cheaper alternative and a disruption backup. Record departure window, walking distance, interchanges, lighting, staffing, accessible toilets and the last safe return option.

Calculate the whole monthly cost

Multiply actual travel days and include parking, fuel, charging, booking fees, taxis after missed connections and childcare caused by journey time. A season ticket may not be best for hybrid work.

Use concessions and employer support

Check disabled or age-related travel passes, railcards and companion rules. Employers may offer salary-sacrifice schemes, loans or Access to Work support under current criteria. Understand tax and repayment terms.

Plan disability and safety adjustments

Request assistance, adjusted hours, reserved parking, accessible routes or reduced peak travel where disability creates disadvantage. Share trip details, use well-lit waiting points and keep emergency contact and battery options for late journeys.

Review reliability, not one good week

Track delays and extra costs for a month. If repeated disruption affects attendance, present evidence and propose an adjustment rather than absorbing daily uncertainty.

Ask an employer about a sustainable commute

Use when travel cost or access affects work.

My current commute costs approximately £[amount] and is unreliable or inaccessible because [details]. A sustainable option would be [flexible hours, parking, home working, Access to Work or season-ticket support]. Please discuss available workplace support, eligibility, repayment terms and a trial review date.

A practical checklist

  • Compare door-to-door routes and backups.
  • Calculate cost using real travel days.
  • Check concessions and employer schemes.
  • Record disruption before requesting an adjustment.
