School uniform grants, swaps and local help

How to combine council grants, school hardship help and uniform swaps while checking that donated or generic items meet the real school policy.

Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance

In brief

Uniform grants are not available everywhere and amounts differ. The school may have second-hand stock or hardship support even when the council has no grant. Ask both.

Schools should publish a uniform policy and consider affordability. Confirm which branded items are compulsory, where generic alternatives are allowed and whether disability or sensory needs justify adjustments.

Check the policy before the grant

Download or request the current uniform list. Mark compulsory, optional and PE items. Ask how often specialist kit is used and whether logos can be added to generic clothing.

Use grants and swaps together

Apply through the council or school route where available and use swaps for gaps or growing room. Inspect zips, seams, soles and labels. Wash items and avoid unsafe drawstrings or recalled products.

Request sensory or disability adjustments

Explain fabric, fastening, footwear, continence, orthotic or temperature needs. Propose a practical alternative that keeps the school identity without causing distress or harm. Ask for the agreement in writing.

Avoid punishment for poverty

Tell the school before the child lacks an item. Request discreet support and the complaints route if the child is excluded from learning because of unaffordable uniform.

A school uniform request

Use this for cost and access in one message.

Please send the current compulsory uniform list and explain generic alternatives, second-hand stock, grants, payment help and the date each item is needed. [Child] also needs an adjustment for [sensory, disability or footwear reason]. Please confirm the agreed alternative in writing and keep the support confidential.

A practical checklist

  • Read the current uniform policy.
  • Ask school and council about help.
  • Inspect swapped items for condition and safety.
  • Agree disability adjustments in writing.
