Back-to-School on a Budget: Finding Free Uniforms and Supplies

A practical back-to-school plan covering uniform, shoes, stationery, devices, lunches and transport without buying everything new.

Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance

In brief

Begin with the school’s actual compulsory list. Families often spend on optional branded items, duplicates or supplies the school already provides. Ask about second-hand stock, generic alternatives and hardship support before shopping.

Spread purchases around growth and the timetable. A child may not need every PE or seasonal item on the first day, but confirm deadlines to avoid sanctions or exclusion from activities.

Audit what still fits and works

Check uniform, shoes, bags, bottles, coats, calculators and devices. Repair, label and wash usable items. Photograph the compulsory list and mark what is already covered, what can wait and what needs a size check.

Use school and community supply routes

Ask about uniform exchanges, grant schemes, parent groups, libraries, device loans and local charities. Verify that donated electrical items are safe and that footwear or specialist sensory items meet the child’s needs.

Prioritise comfort and attendance

Cheap clothing is not good value if seams, fabric or fit make it unusable. Ask for reasonable uniform adjustments for disability, sensory or religious needs. Tell the school early if costs may prevent attendance or participation.

Avoid expensive short-term credit

Use a written list and price the whole basket before using BNPL or catalogue credit. Ask the school for staged payments or delayed items. A uniform loan or voucher is safer than creating instalments that continue after the child outgrows the clothes.

A back-to-school support request

Send this before purchasing the full list.

I am preparing for the new school year and the compulsory items are difficult to afford. Please confirm which uniform and supplies are essential on the first day, generic alternatives, second-hand stock, grants or hardship help, device loans and any reasonable adjustment for [child’s need].

A practical checklist

  • Use the school’s compulsory list.
  • Audit existing items before shopping.
  • Ask about second-hand, grants and device loans.
  • Avoid credit for items likely to be outgrown quickly.
