Octopus Energy Assist and payment help

How to ask Octopus Energy for payment and vulnerability support, check its current assistance routes and keep the account based on accurate usage.

Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance

In brief

Octopus customers in difficulty should contact the supplier about an affordable arrangement, meter readings, prepayment issues and vulnerability. Any named assistance fund or programme can change, so use the current official support page.

A temporary credit or grant does not replace a sustainable ongoing payment. Review usage estimates, tariff, debt and wider income support together.

Correct the account picture

Submit readings or check smart-meter data, query estimates and ask Octopus to show current usage and arrears separately. Check whether a direct debit is based on an outdated annual forecast.

Request affordability options

Explain income change and propose what is affordable. Ask about payment-date changes, debt arrangements, prepayment support, Priority Services and any current hardship programme.

Protect essential energy use

Describe medical equipment, disability, children or inability to top up. Ask for emergency support through the proper supplier route and maintain a network outage plan.

Escalate unresolved problems

Use the complaint process for inaccurate billing, ignored vulnerability or failed arrangements. Keep meter evidence and contact history and ask about independent dispute resolution.

An Octopus affordability message

Use the official account contact.

My Octopus account is unaffordable. Please review actual meter data, separate current usage and arrears, recalculate the payment, record [vulnerability need] and explain every current assistance or hardship route. I can afford £[amount] after essentials and need the arrangement confirmed in writing.

A practical checklist

  • Check meter data and estimates.
  • Review direct debit against real usage.
  • Ask about current assistance and Priority Services.
  • Keep evidence for complaints.
