United Utilities water bill help

How to ask United Utilities about social tariffs, WaterSure, payment matching and support for a water bill that no longer fits the household budget.

Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance

In brief

United Utilities may offer several support schemes with different tests and effects. Ask for a full affordability review rather than choosing a scheme by name from an old article.

Check whether the account is metered, the annual charge, household income, benefit status and high essential water use. An arrangement should cover future charges as well as arrears.

Ask for a scheme comparison

Request the current tariff or cap, payment-support and debt-matching routes, their eligibility and what happens when circumstances change. Note whether an award is time-limited or reviewed.

Review the meter question

A meter can reduce some bills and increase others. Use the company’s estimate with actual household size, disability-related water use, garden and appliances. Ask about assessed charges where a meter cannot be fitted.

Make the plan sustainable

Separate current annual charges and old debt. Agree an amount that covers essential use and check whether matching depends on maintaining payments.

Use priority and accessibility services

Register communication, meter-reading or incident needs and nominate a supporter through the proper authority process.

A United Utilities affordability request

Use this instead of selecting one scheme blindly.

Please compare every current United Utilities affordability route for my household, including social tariffs, WaterSure, metering or assessed charges, payment matching and Priority Services. Show the annual charge, debt effect, evidence, review period and affordable payment in writing.

A practical checklist

  • Ask for a side-by-side scheme comparison.
  • Check meter suitability.
  • Separate current charges and arrears.
  • Understand conditions on matched payments.
