Training, Access to Work and employment support for disabled adults

How to combine skills training, employment advice, reasonable adjustments and Access to Work without being pushed into unsuitable activity.

In brief

Employment support should begin with the person’s goal, health, access needs and current skills. Training is useful when it connects to a realistic role; repeated generic courses can delay practical help.

Access to Work may fund support related to a job, while education funding, jobcentre programmes, colleges and charities cover different stages. Ask who owns each action and whether participation is voluntary or linked to a benefit requirement.

Start from the role, not the programme catalogue

Identify the job family, hours, environment and access conditions. Then choose training that closes a specific gap. Ask for course outcomes, accessibility, placement links and recognised accreditation.

Agree adjustments during training

Request accessible materials, breaks, assistive technology, support workers, remote attendance or alternative assessment. The training provider and employment programme may have separate responsibilities.

Use Access to Work at the right point

The scheme is generally linked to paid employment or a confirmed start rather than broad pre-employment training. Apply early when a role is secured and describe the workplace barrier.

Challenge unsuitable pressure

Ask for decisions, mandatory requirements and sanctions information in writing. Seek welfare-rights or disability-employment advice if health evidence or reasonable adjustments are ignored.

A goal-led employment request

Use with a work coach or provider.

My employment goal is [role or type of work] within these access conditions: [hours, environment and support]. I need help with [specific skill or barrier], not another general course. Please explain the training outcome, adjustments, whether participation is mandatory, and when Access to Work becomes relevant.

  • Choose training linked to a realistic role.
  • Confirm accreditation and accessibility.
  • Separate pre-employment support from Access to Work.
  • Get mandatory requirements in writing.
