The Non-Judgmental Guide to Rebuilding Your Credit Score from Scratch
How to improve credit records gradually after debt or missed payments without buying unnecessary “credit builder” products.
Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance
In brief
A credit score is a lender’s risk indicator, not a measure of character. Different agencies and lenders use different data. Start by checking reports for errors, outdated links and unknown accounts.
Stability, accurate registration and sustainable payments matter more than opening new credit. Protect essentials and any debt solution before trying to optimise a score.
Check all main credit reports
Use free statutory or consumer access and review addresses, electoral registration, account status, defaults and financial associations. Report errors to both the agency and lender with evidence.
Build reliable current history
Pay existing affordable commitments on time, keep contact details current and avoid repeated applications. A small buffer and reminders can prevent accidental late payments.
Treat old debt correctly
Follow agreed arrangements and understand how defaults, insolvency or settlements are recorded. Do not prioritise a score over rent, energy or food. Seek advice before paying old disputed debt.
Avoid expensive score products
Credit-building cards, subscriptions and loans can add cost and temptation. Apply only for a useful affordable product, not solely to generate activity.
A credit-report correction request
Use with the lender and credit agency.
My credit report shows [account or entry] incorrectly as [problem]. The accurate position is [brief facts], supported by [evidence]. Please investigate, correct all agencies you report to, add a notice while disputed and confirm the outcome and date in writing.
A practical checklist
- Check reports for errors and associations.
- Protect current affordable payments.
- Follow debt solutions before score goals.
- Avoid products bought only to build credit.
