Sure Start Maternity Grant and other help with a new baby
How to check the Sure Start Maternity Grant and wider help with pregnancy and a new baby, including timing, devolved schemes and urgent essentials.
Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance
In brief
The Sure Start Maternity Grant applies under specific benefit, family and timing rules in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland has a different Best Start Grant system. Check the nation and current claim window before relying on a general checklist.
A grant is only one route. Healthy Start, maternity benefits, Universal Credit, Council Tax Support, local welfare, baby banks and family services may address different costs.
Check the nation and deadline first
Use the official page for where you live and note the earliest and latest claim dates. Ask a midwife, health visitor, Jobcentre or advice service to confirm the form and certification process. A late claim may need an explanation and is not guaranteed.
Understand the family-rule exceptions
Eligibility can differ depending on whether this is the first child, multiple birth, kinship or adoption circumstances. Do not assume an older child automatically rules out help. Read the current exceptions and provide the requested evidence.
Build a practical baby-cost plan
List safe sleep, feeding, clothing, nappies, transport and heating needs. Check baby banks and local reuse schemes for suitable items, but use current safety advice for mattresses, car seats and recalled products. Avoid high-cost credit for bundles of non-essential equipment.
Connect to ongoing support
Check maternity pay or allowance, Child Benefit, Universal Credit child and childcare elements, Healthy Start and Council Tax Support. Family hubs or health visitors may know local essentials support and parenting services.
A maternity-support enquiry
Use this with an adviser, midwife or family service.
I am expecting or caring for a new baby in [nation], with an expected or placement date of [date]. Please check the current maternity grant or Best Start route, the claim window and any exception that applies to my family. I also need information about Healthy Start, local baby essentials and ongoing benefit support.
A practical checklist
- Use the scheme for your UK nation.
- Check the claim window and family exceptions.
- Prioritise safe essential baby items.
- Link the one-off grant to ongoing income support.
