Supermarket Savings: Best Apps and Strategies for Low-Income Families
How to use loyalty apps, price comparisons and reduced food without letting “savings” collect data, drive impulse buying or increase waste.
Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance
In brief
An app saves money only when the household would have bought the item anyway and uses it before waste. Compare final basket cost, not points or percentage claims.
Use a short shopping list, unit prices and one or two trusted schemes. Protect privacy and avoid linking payment or location data unless the benefit is worth it.
Choose the cheapest usable shop
Include travel, delivery, minimum spend, dietary availability and time. A slightly higher shelf price may cost less than travelling to several stores.
Use loyalty prices carefully
Check the ordinary price elsewhere and expiry of points. Avoid stocking up only because a personalised offer appears. Review marketing and data permissions.
Make reductions safe
Check use-by dates, transport food home quickly and freeze promptly. “Best before” and “use by” are different. Do not buy more chilled food than storage allows.
Keep cash and voucher support in view
Healthy Start, school meals, food pantries and local welfare may be more valuable than app optimisation. Use support before cutting necessary nutrition.
A five-minute shopping plan
Use before opening retailer apps.
We need [meals and essentials] this week. The maximum basket is £[amount], including delivery or travel. We will compare unit price for the main items, use offers only for planned purchases, and stop when the list is covered.
A practical checklist
- Compare the whole basket and travel.
- Use offers only for planned items.
- Handle reduced food safely.
- Check food support where needed.
