Navigating the Motability Scheme: Getting a Reliable Vehicle with Benefits
How to check Motability eligibility, compare whole-lease needs and understand what happens to the qualifying mobility payment.
Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance
In brief
The Motability Scheme allows eligible recipients of specified mobility allowances to lease a vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair by assigning the qualifying payment. It is not a free car and not every disability benefit or rate qualifies. Use the current Motability rules and the benefit-award end date.
Choose around real mobility, passenger, equipment, charging and driving needs. Compare advance payment, fuel or electricity, insurance terms, adaptations, mileage, servicing and what happens if the benefit award changes.
Confirm the qualifying award
Check the exact mobility component, rate and remaining award length accepted by Motability. Do not order based on a pending claim or an assumption that a PIP award automatically qualifies.
Write the household vehicle specification
Include wheelchair or buggy space, transfer height, number of seats, boot shape, range, charging, parking, automatic transmission and drivers. Test equipment in the actual vehicle rather than relying only on boot litres.
Understand the full lease
Ask what the allowance covers, the non-refundable advance payment, mileage terms, insurance drivers, servicing, tyres, breakdown, adaptations and end-of-lease process. Running fuel or electricity and some charges remain the customer’s responsibility.
Plan adaptations before ordering
Use an adaptations assessment for hoists, hand controls, swivel seats or access systems. Confirm funding, installation, delivery timing and whether the adaptation transfers to a later vehicle.
Prepare for award review or loss
Ask Motability what happens if the qualifying benefit ends, changes or is under challenge. Keep benefit review dates visible and do not assume the vehicle can remain indefinitely during every dispute.
Prepare a Motability appointment
Use with a dealer or Motability adviser.
The qualifying award is [benefit/rate] until [date]. The vehicle must carry [people and equipment] and meet [transfer, access, range or charging needs]. Please confirm advance payment, allowance used, adaptations, delivery, insurance, mileage and what happens if the benefit award changes before or during the lease.
A practical checklist
- Verify the exact qualifying award and end date.
- Test people and equipment in the vehicle.
- Compare full running and adaptation costs.
- Understand benefit-change and lease-end rules.
