In brief

Disability support is spread across different systems. Benefits address income or extra costs; councils assess social care and adaptations; employers and education providers consider adjustments; transport and bill schemes have separate tests.

Start with the barrier causing the most harm. One trusted adviser or advocate can help map the routes, but no single organisation controls every decision.

Choose the life area first

Name the current barrier: personal care, work, school, transport, housing, bills, communication or legal decision. This identifies the responsible organisation faster than searching only by diagnosis.

Separate assessments and evidence

A PIP award, EHCP, care assessment and occupational-health report serve different legal tests. Reuse relevant facts but tailor the explanation to the decision.

Ask for access while waiting

Reasonable adjustments and immediate risk support should not always wait for diagnosis or a benefit decision. Describe functional need and request interim changes.

Keep one support map

Record the organisation, purpose, status and next date. Remove duplicate referrals and note who has consent to share information.

Use with an adviser or advocacy service.

My most urgent disability-related barrier is [area and consequence]. Services already involved are [names]. Please help me separate the benefit, social-care, employment, housing, transport and adjustment routes, identify the first decision, and avoid duplicate assessments where evidence can be reused.
