Buy now pay later help: Klarna, Clearpay, PayPal Credit and store instalments
How to take control of Klarna, Clearpay, PayPal Credit and store instalments when several small schedules are colliding with essential bills.
Last reviewed: 6 July 2026 · UK guidance
In brief
Buy now, pay later is credit or deferred payment even when checkout made it feel informal. List every provider, balance and next date so the total becomes visible. Put rent, Council Tax, energy, food and medication ahead of non-priority instalments.
Contact providers before repeatedly moving money between accounts or opening another agreement. Ask about hardship arrangements, fees, interest, collections and credit reporting, and use free debt advice when several products are unaffordable.
Create one instalment calendar
Open each app and record the remaining balance, next payment, payment method and overdue status. Include PayPal Credit, store finance and instalment cards used in the same way.
Stop new commitments while assessing
Remove saved BNPL options, cancel non-essential pending orders where permitted and return unwanted purchases within consumer rules. Do not use one provider to pay another.
Ask for a sustainable arrangement
Explain the change in circumstances and what can be paid after priority bills. Request the effect on fees, interest, account use and credit files in writing.
Escalate the whole debt picture
When several creditors are involved, use free debt advice rather than negotiating each in isolation. Complain if vulnerability or affordability information is ignored.
A BNPL hardship message
Send separately to each provider and keep copies.
I am in financial difficulty and cannot maintain the scheduled instalments without missing priority household costs. I can currently afford £[amount]. Please explain hardship options, freeze avoidable fees, confirm interest and credit reporting, and communicate in writing while I obtain free debt advice.
A practical checklist
- List every instalment and date.
- Pause new BNPL use.
- Protect priority bills.
- Use free debt advice for multiple products.
